Summer 2021 - Spring 2022

This project was my first while working at Hisel Flynn Architects. We were tasked with unifying a family's two unit, philly-style home in Somerville, MA. As part of this, we'd be turning the first floor into a new kitchen, dining and living area for the family. The second floor would then include new bedrooms and a playroom for the family's young children.

A primary goal for this project was to find an elegant way to connect distinct yet related spaces within the existing foot print in order to give the home and open yet defined arrangement of program. In order to accomplish this we use subtle curvature and light to direct the eye into adjoining spaces while allowing the residents to feel distinctly in or the other.

HFA enjoys working collaboratively with our clients and builders, and this project was no different. One of our clients is a structural engineer teaching at MIT, and designed the curved beam above the kitchen island in a way that highlights the specific structural loads placed upon it. She also had a outsized role in making the interior design and material choices throughout the project, which we could not have been happier with.
